Where do the averages come from, and how is yours compared?
The averages are the sizes jewellers report selling most (women US 6 to 7, men US 9 to 10); the ranges are US 5 to 8 and 8 to 12. Your size is converted to a circumference and placed below, inside or above the range.
Worked example. US 6 is 16.51 mm across and 51.9 mm around; US 7 is 17.32 mm and 54.4 mm. A UK M (52.5 mm around) is US 6.25, inside the women’s common band. A US 11 (20.57 mm) is in the men’s usual range but above the most common pair.
Why there is no true average
Nobody measures a population’s fingers; the figures come from sales. They are still useful: a surprise engagement ring bought at US 6½ is within a size of most women, and a man’s band at US 10 is within a size of most men, and plain bands resize easily. For a ring with stones all the way round, which cannot be resized, measure.
Which finger
The averages are for the ring finger of the left hand, the usual engagement and wedding finger. The index finger is about one to two sizes larger, the little finger two to three smaller, and the dominant hand runs about a quarter size larger than the other.
From the average to a measurement
The chart turns any measurement into a size, the men’s chart covers the upper range in detail, and the fit guide covers knuckles, wide bands and the weather.
Questions about average ring sizes
What is the average ring size for women?
US 6 to 7 (UK L½ to N½, EU 52 to 54.5), about 16.5 to 17.3 mm across, by what jewellers sell most. The usual range is US 5 to 8.
What is the average ring size for men?
US 9 to 10 (UK R½ to T½, EU 59.5 to 62), about 18.9 to 19.8 mm across. The usual range is US 8 to 12.
Where do these figures come from?
From what jewellers and ring makers report selling, not from a measured survey of fingers. They are consistent across retailers and countries, but they describe buyers of rings, who skew adult and towards engagement and wedding sizes.
Does height change ring size?
Loosely. Taller and heavier people tend to have larger fingers, and the same person’s size moves half a size with weight, heat and the time of day. Hands also differ: the dominant hand is often a quarter size larger.
Can I guess a size from the average?
For a surprise, the average is a starting point, and a plain band is easy to resize. For anything with stones round the band, measure: the string method or a borrowed ring on the on-screen sizer takes a minute.
